Neal Hefti – I Must Know (from the Warner Bros. film “Sex And The Single Girl”)
Neal Hefti’s first film score was for “Sex And The Single Girl”, a great 1964 comedy starring Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Henry Fonda, Lauren Bacall and Mel Ferrer. The film “Sex And The Single Girl” was inspired by the runaway bestseller of the same name by Helen Gurley Brown (played by Natalie in the film). Brown’s handbook for the footloose femme had been devoured by hundreds of thousands of readers, and transformed into a comedy film with a definite (for the time) modern attitude. Neal Hefti’s fast paced score raced right along with every twist in the hectic story. This music “I Must Know” accompanies a frenzied chase by Tony, Natalie, Henry, Lauren and Mel in various taxis, automobiles, and other means of locomotion. A very funny film with great comedic performances (particularly from Bacall and Fonda – who often did not do comedy).
